Malawi, Mumbo Island & Chelinda Lodge

MALAWI, one of Africa's hidden treasures with its variety of attractions, including the lake, natural and bush areas, scuba diving and a variety of water activities. The Lake Malawi area offers a perfect combination of an in-land bush and lake-side vacation in what can only be descriped as antiquated Africa at its best. Certainly one of my top 10 destinations so far, with an unusual diving environment to explore.

MUMBO ISLAND is a pristine island in Lake Malawi National Park which, with its crystal clear waters and innumerable species of cichlid fish, offers some of the best freshwater scuba diving in the world and the best snorkelling on the Lake. The island lies 10km north-west of Cape Maclear, where reception and the nearest point of road access is located. The camp comprises five units (two twin tents and three twin reed chalets) perched on rocks high above the water shaded by lush foliage, each with bucket showers, ‘eco-loos’ and wooden deck. A hammock provides a comfortable spot to take in the idyllic Lake view. A twin-tented family unit is tucked into the forest near the main beach. There is a dining area, bar and watersport gazebo of timber and thatch.
Activities here vary from lazing in a hammock to snorkelling, diving, swimming, kayaking, walking and birdwatching. Guests have the option of boating or paddling to explore the granitic islands of the Lake.
CHELINDA LODGE offers spacious log cabins all with sweeping views over Nyika’s rolling grasslands, which are often dotted with large herds of roan, eland and zebra. A pocket of hagenia woodland and forest backdrop perfectly shelters this idyllic upland camp

ACTIVITIES IN AND AROUND MUMBO ISLAND AND CHELINDA LODGE
MUMBO ISLAND, unlike most island destinations in the region, has never been populated by humans and is still in its natural state. This, together with the focus on non-motorised water sports, makes Mumbo Island Camp ideal for the active outdoors enthusiast. The most popular activities here are diving or snorkelling through the crystal-clear water and lazing in a hammock in the 'chill-out' area, contemplating the breathtaking scenery.
Mumbo Island Camp is a PADI registered resort offering beginner, advanced and specialty courses in scuba diving, as well as gear hire and casual dives. Divers and snorkellers alike can view enormous numbers of the cichlid fish species; these small, colourful fish have adapted to so many variations that they are considered of comparable importance to the Galapagos finches in the study of evolution
Swimming, kayaking, and birdwatching are also popular. For the more intrepid, there are boating and paddling options, exploring the granitic islands in a freshwater Rift Valley lake. Birders can enjoy the abundant African Fish-Eagles amongst others.
CHELINDA LODGE offers guided walks, mountain biking, game drives and scenic plane rides over the plateau are some of the activities on offers. From finding rare orchids, to enjoying a sighting of the legendary leopards of Nyika, this is one of Africa’s most iconic destinations.
