The Zanzibar Archipelago consists of two main islands, Pemba and Unguja, and about 50 smaller islets. The total population is about one million, with the majority living in the capital, Zanzibar Town.   The people of Zanzibar speak the purest form of Kiswahili, but English is also spoken by most of the people you’ll meet, and many have a good working knowledge of Arabic and European languages.

Mnarani Beach Cottages are set atop a cove on the beautiful beach of Nungwi in the very North of Zanzibar Island (Unguja). Its proximity to Mnemba Atoll makes it one of the best spots for snorkeling, game fishing and diving. Nungwi these days has a reputation as being a bit of a party place, but even though we are only a 10 minutes’ walk (or a short taxi ride) away from the center of the action, you will find our surroundings peaceful and private.  Although the number of travellers who come to explore the North Coast of Zanzibar has increased a lot in recent years, the village of Nungwi has retained its traditions and values. Most of its people still live off the sea or are doing small scale business. Zanzibarians are generally very friendly and welcoming, and to venture out of the hotel premises and gain some insights in everyday life here in Zanzibar is highly recommended.  Despite all its natural beauty and the available creature comforts, Zanzibar’s infrastructure is not as developed as we would like it to be – it’s still rural Africa -, so we have to deal with the occasional shortcomings, but we will do our very best to make sure you won’t even notice.

A one hour’s drive from Zanzibar Town or the airport on a good road will bring you here. We gladly arrange for you to be met on arrival in Zanzibar or picked up at any other hotel. Divers will appreciate the close proximity to the Mnemba Atoll.  Nungwi is the most beautiful beach on the island – and because it can only accommodate 54 guests, even in high season, you’ll be guaranteed a peaceful, crowd-free beach for perfect relaxation.

Fisherman House was built with the idea of creating comfortable accommodation for our guests who travel with a big family or in a group. It is set in a tropical garden, only 50 meters from the beach.  There are two apartments, one with two bedrooms and another with three bedrooms.  Each room has its private bathroom en suite, as well as air conditioning, fan and safe deposit box, and, at 16 square meters, they are all big enough to add an extra bed if required.

Every apartment also sports a big lounge / dining area with kitchenette and a spacious verandah. The furniture is made of coconut wood traditionally grown in Zanzibar. The two apartments have connecting doors for families who want to share the space.  On the top of the house, there is an open space where you can sunbathe, have a barbeque or celebrate a special birthday or anniversary. The view is stunning and faces sunset and the sea.

There are twelve Standard Cottages, which are arranged in pairs. They are small, but comfortable, and equipped with all the essentials: en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, fans, mosquito nets, safe deposit box and lovely spacious verandahs. Eight are located along the sea front with views of the ocean, and four are within the lush calm of our tropical garden.

Mahaba Cottage is the romantic honeymoon accommodation, located in a private part of the hotel with its own garden and access to the beach. 'Mahaba' means romance in Swahili and this cottage is definitely romantic. Decorated in the local style with wooden floors and walls lined with traditional woven palm fronds. It is self-contained, with kitchen area (inc. fridge) and bathroom, with an open-plan design on the ground floor for sitting and relaxing, and an airy sleeping area upstairs for two people. It also has a spacious balcony, which overlooks the ocean and where sunrise can be viewed. An attractive garden fronts the cottage. To add to the comfort of this special cottage, there is also a CD player, hammock, and Arabic cushions for relaxing.

There are four “Superior Rooms”, that are perfect for guests who like some extra space and comfort, and families with smaller children.  Each room has an open plan ground floor with a sitting area (where an extra bed can be added), bathroom and kitchenette with fridge and coffee/tea making facilities, whilst on the first floor mezzanine is the sleeping area with a large double bed.

The cottages are decorated in local style, using furniture designed from refashioned ngalawas and dhows (the traditional sailing boats on the Swahili Coast).  The spacious balconies on both floors offer you unimpeded views of spectacular sunrises over the Indian Ocean.

The ten rooms in Zanzibar House are all named after the islands and islets of the Zanzibar archipelago.  They offer superb accommodation with a little extra luxury.  The rooms' size is a spacious twenty-five square meters.  They are fully air conditioned and have high standard en-suite bathrooms, fridges and a tea / coffee station for your convenience. There is also wireless internet access.

Each room opens onto a beautiful large wooden verandah or balcony where you can enjoy the sunrise in the morning, relaxation in the afternoon, and starry skies at night.  For those wanting to share their holiday experience with family or friends, the ground floor rooms (Pemba, Unguja, Mnemba and Misali) offer the option of joining rooms for groups, as well as direct access to the sun deck and the beach.

The first floor rooms (Tumbatu, Kojani, Bawe and Chumbe) boast the same large space, with balconies looking out over the Indian Ocean.

The two top floor rooms, “Sunrise” and “Sunset” with their more private setting are specially designed for honeymoon couples. The bedrooms open onto a balcony with breathtaking views: you can watch traditional dhows sailing past in the stunning turquoise and azure waters of the Indian Ocean from your hammock!

And if you still want something more, climb up to our roof top terrace to take in the spectacular 360 degree view over the whole Northern part of the island and at a million sparkling stars at night.

In Zanzibar seafood is a must – and the restaurant reflects this. Fish is freshly caught every morning, and comes tfrom the local fish market or direct from local fishermen. It is prepared in traditional Swahili style, and served in the open air.

There is also a small bar at one side of the lodge. It’s a great place to relax in the evenings and learn to play bao, a traditional game here in Zanzibar - don’t leave Zanzibar without trying a game or two.

Try a sunset cruise on a local sailing dhow this can be a group booking or for honeymooners a romantic way to relax before dinner.

Overwhelming numbers of tropical fish proliferate on the coral gardens that form a lagoon around Ras Nungwi. The majestic whale shark migrates past this area twice a year and humpback whales sometimes breach right alongside the beach areas.  Dolphins are permanent residents often accompanying boat trips, jumping and diving with their young.  The secluded beach at Ras Nungwi is also popular with turtles who return year after year to hatch their young. Nearby Mnemba Atoll has been declared a marine conservation area and offers a unique opportunity for both divers and snorkellers to experience the best of Zanzibar’s underwater world.  With warm tropical waters and visibility often over thirty metres, Ras Nungwi is the perfect diving destination, with plenty to excite professionals and beginners alike. Dives are conducted daily, frequenting over twenty stunning sites.
