Moored just a stones throw away is the luxury yacht "Mufasa." PADI scuba diving centre, water sports and activities are all on site and easily accessible to our resident guests. The lodge operates on a "full board" basis which includes three delicious meals each day, plus teas, coffees, cakes and snacks. The local and international chefs take pride in presenting a tempting selection of dishes for the buffet table, using the freshest of ingredients. Dining is al-fresco in a family setting. Children are most welcome. Early meals and child friendly menus can be arranged. Dietary needs are catered to.
Lake Malawi is ideal for the diving enthusiast; clear, fresh, warm water, no tides or currents and over 600 different species of brightly coloured tropical fish known as Cichlids. See mouth brooders sucking in and releasing their young, witness the "play dead fish" attack his prey, watch out for the "around the corner fish" and the "upside down fish". Fascinating breeding, nesting and fish behaviour patterns pointed out to you by our knowledgeable dive professionals will increase your awareness of this unique and special underwater environment.
ABOUT MUMBO ISLAND
Mumbo Island is a pristine and deserted tropical island, and the undisputed jewel of the Lake Malawi National Park. Mumbo Island has never been populated, and is still in it’s natural state with a thick covering of miombo woodland and ancient fig and baobab trees. The waters around the island are clean and calm, and allow all guests - irrespective of fitness or experience - to enjoy sea kayaking, snorkeling and SCUBA diving. The island’s only mammals – Spotted-necked Otters - are remarkably playful and regularly join guests for a snorkel or swim.
On Mumbo Island the theme is barefoot luxury - there is everything that you need and nothing that you don't. The tiny island camp sleeps only fourteen guests in tastefully furnished tents with shaded decks, hammocks, and en suite hot bucket showers and ‘eco-loos’. A dining room and bar, with a lovely lounge under a baobab tree, complete camp infrastructure. The camp is built of reeds, timber, thatch and canvas. It is perched on high rocks overlooking the water and blends in with the African bush to create a ‘Robinson Crusoe’ atmosphere of rustic charm. The whole of Mumbo Island lies within an exclusive concession, thus guaranteeing privacy in paradise. Mumbo Island Camp ranks amongst the finest in Malawi, and is a member of the prestigious Wilderness Safaris Portfolio.
ABOUT DOMWE ISLAND
Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi, with a circumference of 11km and a highest point 400m above lake level. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow Ilala Gap which, due to fluctuations in lake level over the millennia, has been dry on several occasions. As a result Domwe Island, unlike all other Lake Malawi islands, is well populated with mammals which have crossed onto the island during these dry times. Domwe Island is part of the Lake Malawi National Park.
Domwe Island Adventure Camp is basic yet exclusive. It lies behind a small beach on the island’s west side. The camp is run on a self-catered basis, with guests making use of the kitchen facilities to prepare their own meals. The kitchen has two full-time staff members, and is fully stocked with fridges, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. Accommodation consists of three fully-furnished safari tents and two tent sites, complemented by a dining area with bar and a water sport gazebo.
